The UArizona National Labs Partnerships Grant is intended to foster research partnerships between UAZ faculty and research scientists and one, or more, Department of Energy National Research Laboratories or Department of Defense National Labs. The goal of these grants is to promote building partnerships, advancing research and development in priority areas as defined by the respective governmental funding agencies coupled with TRIF and UA, and developing extramural proposals for submission. Applicants may propose research on any topic of interest to both the University and the respective National Lab.

Applicants may request up to $50,000 and may be used for items outlined in the Budget Preparation section that begins on page 5 of the Proposal Preparation Guide (PPG). Funds may not be used for supplemental compensation or summer salary for UAZ faculty and staff, and cannot directly pass to the national lab partner. However the funds can support the partnership in many ways including, travel, student training, honoraria, workshops, and catering. Please note that this solicitation is intended solely for partnership and relationship-related costs. Publications are not covered in the scope of this grant, recipients should consult the Publication Grants solicitation following the closure of their award period of performance. Applicants may participate as PI on one UA National Labs Partnerships Grant per year.

Proposal preparation, submission, and processing information is available in the RII Proposal Preparation Guide (PPG) v.8, which is downloadable in the Arizona Cultivate competition. The PPG includes requirements for the project narrative and supplemental documents; it is strongly encouraged that interested applicants read the PPG in full, as proposals that do not match the PPG will be returned without review.

Solicitation specific requirements:

  • A letter of collaboration/support from the respective National Laboratory partner. Within the letter, please indicate if the UArizona funds are being used to complement LDRD funds.

Please note there is a new budget approval process that utilizes an applicant driven routing step after submission. Applicants will input the email address of their business officer or award/research administrator when prompted at the end of the application prior to submission. The email address should be for the person who has authority to create, review, and approve the budget. The system will send a link for approval via the email listed to the business officer or award/research administrator where they may confirm they reviewed and approved the submitted budget. This approval step is required before an application is accepted for compliance checks and formal review. The deadline for business officer or award/research administrator is July 13, 2023 at 5:00 pm. so it is recommended to communicate with this individual about your budget and this process in advance.
