Appropriate training is required for all individuals that work with and/or supervise the use of recombinant and biohazardous material. The Biosafety Protection Courses are an annual requirement. Annual refresher courses can be taken online. You can see the status of your training by logging into the User Dashboard.

Basic Biosafety Protection Course - required for all personnel working with BSL-1 or BSL-2 agents.

Plant Hazard Protection Course - required for research involving transgenic plants, plant pathogens, and organisms associated with plants.

BSL-3 Protection Course - required for anyone working within a BSL-3 laboratory.

Select Agent and Toxin Protection Course – required for all individuals who have undergone a security risk assessment for access to select agent and toxins at the University of Arizona.

Bloodborne Pathogen Course – prerequisite for the Basic Biosafety Protection Course and required for any individual who may come in contact with bloodborne pathogen. The course is provided by Risk Management Services.

Registering for a Course

To register for this course, the Approval Holder (AH) or Approval Safety Coordinator (ASC) must send an email to rlss-bio-support@email.arizona.edu with the following information:

  • Legal Name
  • Official work email address
  • Approval Name and Number

The worker, AH or ASC will be notified of their status throughout the process.

Requesting Accommodations for a Disability

Basic Biosafety Protection Course

The Basic Biosafety Protection Course is required for all personnel working in with BSL-1 or BSL-2 agents. The University of Arizona’s Bloodborne Pathogen Course offered through the University of Arizona’s Desire to Learn (D2L) by Risk Management is a prerequisite for the Basic Biosafety Protection Course.

This course is offered online (rlss.arizona.edu/train), homework MUST be completed to recieve credit for the full course. 

Plant Hazard Protection Course

The Plant Hazard Protection Course is required for personnel working with pathogenic plant microorganisms, genetically engineered plants, genetically engineered plant-associated microbes, and genetically engineered plant-associated macroorganisms (arthropods and nematodes).

To register for this course, the Approval Holder (AH) or Approval Safety Coordinator (ASC) must send an email to rlss-bio-support@email.arizona.edu with the following information:

  • Legal Name
  • Official work email address
  • Approval Name and Number

The worker, AH, or ASC will be notified of their status throughout the process.

Registration and completed homework are required for attendance. You will receive a confirmation email verifying you have been registered.
