Radiation Detection Instruments

All radiation detection instruments must be registered with Research Laboratory & Safety Services (RLSS). If you purchase or transfer an instrument, contact RLSS.

Contact RLSS when you receive the new survey instrument.  RLSS will:

  • Enter the instrument into the database
  • Calibrate the instrument if it is not already calibrated by the manufacturer or vendor
  • Affix a check source if necessary so that you can check to see if it is working properly

Instrument Selection Guide

Geiger-Mueller Detectors

Geiger-Mueller survey meters are required for Approvals that are permitted to possess more than one millicurie (combined) of any energetic emitting radionuclides such as Phosphorus-32.

Low Energy Gamma (LEG) Scintillator

Low Energy Gamma (LEG) scintillator probes are designed to detect radiation emissions for low energy emitters radionuclides, such as Iodine-125 or Arsenic-73.

Dose Rate Meters (Ionization Chambers)

Dose rate meters are used to conduct dose rate surveys and are not adequate for contamination surveys.

Calibration

  • Portable radiation detection instruments are required to be calibrated annually.  This service is provided at no charge by Research Laboratory & Safety Services (RLSS).
  • A member of RLSS will contact Approval Holders or Approval Safety Coordinators to arrange for the instrument to be picked up for calibration and return it when the process is completed. This process takes approximately one week. If you require a loaner instrument, notify RLSS when you are contacted.
  • Do not alter the settings inside the instrument body.
